The Star Inn York is within easy walking distance of York Station and has a lovely riverside terrace to enjoy. Literally built into York’s long history, the Michelin starred restaurant is located on the edge of York’s Museum Gardens, close to the historic Lendal Bridge and Tower. The original building, which backs onto the City Walls, was constructed in 1836 to house the York Waterworks pump engine, built by Joseph Smeaton in 1784.
The Brasserie-style restaurant was opened by Andrew Pern to establish a food-led celebration destination in one of York’s unique locations. Andrew and his chefs create brasserie-style seasonal dishes. “Bringing the Countryside to town” – supporting the very best in local, seasonal produce with the all-day menu and daily specials.
Meals are served at breakfast, lunch and dinner and guests can retire to the fairy-lit terrace for a digestif and magical views over the River Ouse.
Andrew Pern’s Star Inn The City has been one of York’s flagship restaurants for a number of years. However, a fire tore through the restaurant’s kitchen in late 2018. Much of the restaurant’s main structure remained intact but many feared the worst. However, it proved to be a turning point, with Andrew and his team taking the opportunity to refocus and refresh the menu.

The Shambles
The Shambles address: YO1 7LZ. The Shambles is a 14th century street in York’s city centre. Many of the overhanging timber-framed buildings once housed butcher’s shops. The Anglo-Saxon name for these premises was ‘Fleshammels’ or “flesh-shelves.” Up until 1872, there were 25 butcher’s shops there.
The name “The Shambles” is sometimes used not just to refer to a specific street, but to the many of narrow lanes that surround it. Today, they are some of England’s most visited streets and are some of the best-preserved streets in England.
When looking at the overhanging buildings, it’s easy to think that they may have fallen forward over time; however, the truth is that this sloping architecture had an original practical purpose. The forward-leaning timber-framed houses give protection to the wattle and daub construction materials of the lower sections of the building. It also provided shade to the slabs of meat laid out on the butcher shop window shelves below.
Now you’ll find independent shops when exploring The Shambles, but you stroll along the quaint streets, you will certainly feel like you have journeyed back hundreds of years.
To make the most of a visit to The Shambles, perhaps join one of the many historic or ghost tours, where expert character guides will take you on trip around the area. You can learn of ghastly stories while visiting significant monuments and buildings that have shaped the city’s past. It is easy to imagine a different past, as you explore the city of York today.
