Black Swan Oldstead- Michelin Star with Tommy Banks(2024)

The Black Swan Oldstead is Tommy Banks’ original Michelin-starred destination restaurant with rooms, beautifully located in the North York Moors National Park – with his amazing two-acre kitchen garden resource.

Tommy Banks has taken ‘grow your own’ to the next level and has developed a cooking style based on his love of the land. All of his ingredients are grown in the restaurant’s kitchen garden which is maintained by himself and his team – an important part of his need to feel connected to his food.

On Monday to Friday, the Black Swan at Oldstead is only open for dinner service – with a tasting menu – so they have all day to forage to give Tommy and his chefs the freedom to cook exactly what is chosen that day. Tommy is very ably supported by his brother James Banks, Front of House, and a knowledgeable wider team.

The restaurant is a modern open space, featuring light furnishings and clean lines. There is an open kitchen which adds to the dynamic style, delivery and experience of the seasonally changing menu.

Tommy Banks grew up on a farm – he has in-depth knowledge of meat and different cattle breeds. Seeing the beast every day, knowing where it has been slaughtered and who slaughtered it is important to him – it is then cut it up and aged themselves for the restaurant. The dinner tasting menu is around £125 to £140 per person. Local farm-to-fork is in action at the Black Swan Oldstead, so your visit supports and encourages the local Yorkshire economy.

The Black Swan at Oldstead has nine bedrooms named after dales and farms around the village. All are uniquely designed and furnished with a mix of character and luxury. When you book a room, a reservation is automatically made for the restaurant.

The rooms are located either at the back of the main building or across the road so you can retire to your room after dinner and then set the next morning off with a proper breakfast – Black Swan-style, of course!

Check-in time at the Black Swan Oldstead

The Black Swan Oldstead is closed during the day, as they forage in the kitchen garden and prepare. Guests are welcome from 5 pm – the bar opens for check-ins at 5 pm. Breakfast is served in the restaurant from 8.30 am-9.30 am with check-out by 10.30 am.

We advise to pre-book taxis and allow 3.5 to 4 hours for dinner at the Black Swan Oldstead.

Are dogs allowed at the Black Swan Oldstead? No dogs or other pets are allowed in the bar, restaurant or bedrooms.

The original building dates back to the 16th century and comprises a relaxing pre-dinner bar area with stone-flagged floors, oak tables and inviting open fire.

Tommy Banks was Britain’s youngest chef to hold a Michelin Star – Local Yorkshire farmers Tom and Anne Banks bought the pub back in 2006. Their sons Tommy and James, then aged 17 and 19 at the time were put in charge. Seven years later, Tommy Banks became the youngest recipient of a Michelin star.
