Is the Star Inn at Harome Open Now? YES!!
In December 2022, a year since the devastating fire of 24 November 2021, the Michelin-starred The Star Inn at Harome reopened for diners after a £2m refurbishment. The Star Inn at Harome has not just been returned to its former glory but has been redesigned so it is definitely worth visiting.
Andrew Pern has owned the Star Inn at Harome since 1996. In November 2021, it was a diner who had raised the fire alarm – she had gone out to her car to get something and when she came back in she told one of the waitresses that the thatch was on fire, then she sat down and finished her pudding!
The fire is believed to have started around 10 pm and has had a devastating effect on the historic old thatched Dining Room and Pub. Nine fire engines were called out to tackle the fire which resulted in extensive damage to much of the ground, first and second floors of the pub.
Star Inn at Harome staff cleared the restaurant and worked to salvage what they could, including the very valuable collection of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson furniture. At one point, 40 officers were battling the blaze. Andrew Pern managed to save a Mouseman balustrade from the fire that had been thrown out by the firemen, not realising what it was, as it was covered in soot.
The saved Mouseman balustrade has become synonymous with Andrew Pern and his staff’s determination to rise from the ashes to become even bigger and better than before. Andrew Pern has now had the balustrade turned into a lamp and it has pride of place in the restored bar. The mainframe of the 14th-century cruck frame has been able to be saved, with other secondary timber elements replaced like for like, using traditional methods.
Cross House Lodge, their rustic rural retreat, was unaffected by the fire and they accepted hotel bookings on a Bed and Breakfast basis throughout the closure, with dining at The Pheasant Hotel in the village, owned by Andrew’s ex-wife Jacqui Pern.
The Star Inn at Harome has remained a firm favourite and hopefully will become one of yours soon if it isn’t already on your radar.
Andrew Pern the Star Inn’s Michelin-starred chef and patron was born on the Yorkshire coast at Whitby – seeing the good quality food products available around him, he was one of the first champions of local food sourcing in the UK.
The acclaimed chef has a substantial kitchen garden behind the pub and works with local producers of pasture feed meat, moorland game, Yorkshire-grown local fruit and vegetables and chooses prime fresh fish and shellfish landed at the Yorkshire coast’s harbours.
Wines and beers are carefully selected to complement dining menus. The locally brewed Yorkshire real ale Black Sheep Best Bitter is available.
